Since the late 1890s Australian rugby teams have been playing in national and international competitions. They have won two world cups as well as several other tournaments. The Australian women's Rugby World Cups have seen four of their players compete.

The capital cities have always been the home of high-level domestic rugby competitions in Australia. These competitions include Super Rugby or the National Rugby Championship. These competitions however are being phased off. In 2020, the NRC is ending, leaving only five Super Rugby teams.
