How did the Flying Wedge Football Formation work?

hooking rugby

In the early 20th century, American football was all about the flying wedge. This was at that time the most used offensive form. In fact, it was the most common offense during the 1905 season. This tactic was very effective but it caused many injuries.

In a nutshell, a flying wedge is a formation that has several players running straight on. The ball carrier can run past them by holding each other up. The line is so narrow that half the world can be thrown through it, but this isn't always true. The wedge variant is still in use today. Some teams even sew handles to the pants of their blockers.

The Flying Wedge is an innovative formation that Lorin F.Deland, Harvard's football coach, created in 1892. Harvard's version consisted of two smaller Vs that could hold five players each. But, the Princeton Tigers made a more modern version. Due to the high number of deaths and injuries it caused, the Flying Wedge was ultimately banned from the gridiron by the Princeton Tigers in 1905.

It is not possible to quantify the number of injuries and deaths caused by flying wedge, however it is known that many players were killed. According to some estimates, 22 players died from the flying wedge in 1905. Another 19 people were also hurt. Many of the injuries suffered were of the neck or head type. Although the Flying Wedge was not an important game changer, it certainly led to many rule amendments that are still in place today.

The introduction of the forward pass was one of the most notable changes in rules. The offensive team could now run the ball directly to the end zone. There were numerous problems with mass momentum formations in this period. Thankfully, the Playing Rules Oversight Panel was established to resolve these problems. The NCAA hired a full time professional to supervise the rules of the sport after World War II.

The most important thing to remember about this is that it is a very complicated system. To make things more difficult, the committee had the task of finding a way to approve any rule changes that were compatible across the board. There were many rule committees that were created. Some of these have continued to exist today. Another task was to find the best way reward the winning team. So it's not surprising that rules have been challenged and reverted in many cases. This can hopefully be avoided in future.

Although the Flying Wedge was a brilliant football innovation, it wasn't the only thing that happened on the field in the first 20th century. This would have been impossible without the regulations and rules of the day. This story has been widely copied in other sports, which is the best part.

What makes parasailing different to parachuting?

Para-gliding involves flying above the ground using a harness attached to a small sail. The harness lets you fly. It will keep you safe when you are falling through the sky.

Flying is easy with no equipment. Simply attach your body to the sail. Then you take off. The sail will be pushed against the wind as you ascend in altitude. This makes it lift you.

As you glide along, your momentum keeps you moving forward. Your momentum propels you forward until you reach its end. The cable ends and you are free to let go of your grip, and then you fall back to Earth.

If you're ready, reattach your sail.

Parasailing is a rapidly growing sport. More than 1 million people participated in parasailing in 2013. It was almost double the number that did so in 2008.
